The requirements for mine disposal will first be reviewed. There remains a need to dispose of historical mines, such as those left over from the two World Wars in Europe. It is acceptable to dispose of such mines one at a time. In the past years, a need to dispose of modern mines, with insensitive explosives has emerged. In some cases, for instance while clearing an assault lane, it is desirable to dispose of several mines at the same, to keep as long as possible the element of surprise.

Next the existing mine disposal systems will be reviewed. These include the remotely operated vehicles specifically designed to operate close to mines, such as the PAP from ECA Group and expendable mine disposal weapons such as the Kster also from ECA. Topics such as signature reduction and behavior in the presence of strong currents will be discussed.

Last some challenges will be discussed, such as operation from an unmanned surface vessel and autonomous mine disposal.
